Job Summary:

Primary functions are to: (1) Provide technical health and safety support to production and plant personnel, (2) assist in the development of plant health & safety and wellness programs and objectives, and (3) coordinate health & safety training programs. The Safety Supervisor, under the direction of the Plant Manager and Regional Safety Manager, serves as a liaison with the medical center and temporary staffing agency to ensure regulatory compliance with Worker’s Compensation.

Principle Accountabilities:

Provide technical health and safety support and information to plant personnel to promote safe behaviors and ensure compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations. Prepare written health and safety programs and policies. Identify safety training needs and develop/coordinate safety training programs

Serve as a Safety Committee member: complete safety inspection reports, work with team to identify improvement opportunities and lead safety teams to execute, lead meetings and complete minutes, participate in preparing plant for internal/external safety audits.

Review injury/illness and non-injury incident investigation reports and work with plant teams to ensure proper completion and corrective actions. Ability to manage injuries and workers compensations claims.

Participate in new product/process reviews and engineering projects for new equipment installations to ensure safety compliance and appropriate training in place

Understand Federal and State occupational safety and health regulations and monitor regulatory changes (through Federal Register, etc.) as they occur. Lead regulatory mandated programs such as but not limited to: respiratory protection, blood borne pathogens, hearing conversation and OSHA recordkeeping/AON.

Serve as liaison with medical center and on-site early intervention specialist to review standard operating procedures relative to emergency response teams and the AED policy/program.

Periodically audit practices and records of manufacturing plant to ensure compliance with company programs and federal/state occupational safety and health regulations.

Performs other tasks as assigned by the Plant Manager and Regional Safety Manager.

Job Complexity

Ability to effectively deal with other people, especially other company personnel, to enlist needed cooperation in implementing regulatory requirements.

Requires ability to perform detailed analyses of accidents/injuries/near misses to determine root cause, recommend appropriate corrective action, and assess effectiveness of the facility’s response.

Must analyze safety audit/inspection findings and insurer recommendations (Travelers, etc.), and identify and implement appropriate corrective action.

Requires ability to interface with representatives of governmental regulatory agencies, including OSHA as required.

Lead Safety Improvement Teams.

Ability to perform risk assessments and lead initiatives to reduce identified risks in plant focus areas such as Machine Guarding/Lockout; Ergonomics; Slip, Trip and Falls, etc.

Job Specifications:

Associate’s degree in a safety science/engineering/industrial hygiene discipline preferred.

Two years of safety related experience, preferably in a food manufacturing environment.

Outstanding interpersonal skills; must be a skilled communicator and interact effectively with all levels of employees — from corporate management to hourly production workers. Excellent presentation skills.

Strong Microsoft Office skills. Results-oriented with strong attention to detail.

Computer proficiency is required in the following: Windows-based software applications (Word, Excel, Access), knowledge in SAP system.
